-
PLACE
Flanked by the verdant volcanic mountains of the island of Kyushu, Hasami is a town of many small family-run pottery workshops that are woven between traditional timber homes, rice terraces and productive gardens. The town's historic Nakaoyama valley is home to one of the worldโs largest climbing kilns and has been the site of over 400 years of continuous porcelain production. Yet Hasami remains relatively unknown outside of Japan as it is often eclipsed by its neighbour Arita โ heralded as the birthplace of Japanese porcelain and the primary producer of the countryโs finest porcelain ware.
People
Today, Hasami is characterised by a youthful and open-minded spirit โ less bound by tradition and willing to blend Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics and technology. The townโs distinct divided labour model means working with a range of small-scale yet highly specialised artisans and workshops is part of the working process of transforming an idea into a finished form. While this type of manufacturing can be more challenging to coordinate, it offers flexibility and integrates diverse skills, problem-solving and innovation at every stage of the process, allowing us to faithfully produce complex forms without compromising on quality.
