About

softedge IS A CERAMIC-BASED PROJECT, DEVOTED TO THE SCULPTURAL POSSIBILITIES OF EVERYDAY TACTILE OBJECTS, AND THE SPONGY EDGES OF THEIR DISCIPLINES.

CURRENTLY TAKING FORM AS AN EVER-EVOLVING COLLECTION OF SLIP-CAST WARES AND AN ONGOING SERIES OF EDITIONS INTENDED TO BE BOTH FUNCTIONAL AND AESTHETIC,
softedge QUESTIONS THE POTENTIAL OF INTERACTING WITH UTILITARIANISM THROUGH A PLAYFUL CONSIDERATION OF USE, OBSCURITIES, AND INTUITIVE, ORIGINAL FORM.

PRODUCING AN ARCHIVE OF ITERATIONS AND PROCESSES GROUPED CHRONOLOGICALLY RATHER THAN BY STYLE, MATERIAL OR TYPE; THE OBJECTS AND IDEAS ARE REVISITED OVER TIME, PRESENTING AS A COLLECTION THAT IS MORE THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS

.

Process

EACH PIECE IN THE softedge COLLECTION IS MOULDED OFF AN ORIGINAL FORM HANDBUILT  BY DESIGNER AND FOUNDER LAYLA CLUER. OUR SMALL STUDIO TEAM USES SIP CASTING METHODS TO CAREFULLY TRANSLATE THESE SCULPTURAL FORMS INTO  FUNCTIONAL CERAMIC WARES FROM OUR SPACE IN BYRON BAY. EVERY MEMBER OF THE TEAM IS AN ARTIST OR CERAMICIST IN THEIR OWN RIGHT, AND THE SPREADING OF THE STUDIO LOAD HAS ALLOWED LAYLA TO FIND THE TIME TO  FOCUS ON A NUMBER OF COLLABORATIONS AND COMMISSIONS, AS WELL AS THE ONGOING SERIES OF HAND PAINTED EDITIONS.
